Speech exam

Recently, I sat the grade 4 public speaking and communication speech exam. For this, I had to give a talk about an aspect of new Zealand ( I did our amazing New Zealand produce), state my opinion on a newspaper article, introduce a speaker to an event of my choice, read an extract from a book then talk about the book with my examiner ( I read an extract from the book, I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, I highly recommend this book) and finally I had to perform an impromptu exercise set by the examiner, this year I had to introduce Malala to my school. The whole exam only lasted 15 minutes and after all my work, I achieved Honours!! I love doing these exams and I would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to further their experience with communication and public speaking.Image result for new zealand produce

Stream trip

Recently, Classes 1,2,5 and 6  visited various streams and rivers to test for water quality and discover what micro invertebrates live in the water. It was amazing to see how the results varied from different spots and to actually see what we swim with. We thank Mr Archer for his help and knowledge towards this.

Shark attack narrative

“Welcome to the Gold Coast, Australia, Good luck and enjoy your time in our beautiful country!” The Flight attendant said, little did the Angelo family  know that this holiday would be one that they would remember forever.
The car door shuts and then comes the banter and whining “ I can't wait to go swimming, when we get to the Gold Coast can we go swimming straight away?” Little Bethany asked.

As they got out of the car, the rays of sun shone brightly upon their heads. The waves of laughter spread from one end of the beach to the other and the distant bells from the ice cream truck rung softly as it began to approach us. A crowd of people soon gathered in the midst of the chaos but there is one man who stood out, the guy in the bright pink board shorts. The look of his red moustache seduced her into a mystical daze, pulling her into a whirlwind of thoughts, what is in that moustache?, is it spaghetti noodles or gooey worms? This was obviously to Bethany's disgust as her mouth shaped the most horrid emotion at the sight of it. Suddenly the man noticed the little 10 year old staring, he became closer.

“ Waters be- a- u- ti- ful isn't it girly?” The man questioned , “ just look at those picturesque waves, blue and brilliant and what about the sun, doesn't it's reflection make you feel warm and cosy, hey can you see that it looks, it looks like a school of Dolphins surfing down the east bay”. “ Can I swim with them?, please mummy!!”
“ I wouldn't” Rua (the pink board shorts guy) warned.

Before Mrs Angelo could say a word, Bethany had abandoned her clothes on the white sandy beach and was diving head first into the shallow depths of the ocean. She ventured out deeper and deeper until all that could be seen were her long blonde pigtails hanging from the top of her head. As the waves thrash heavily  against the walls, the clouds turn black and in that moment the air appeared thinner for Bethany as she gasps for breath, struggling to keep her head above the water. From the shore, Mr and Mrs Angello can not contain their worry, their girl is out there, Scared and helpless.

As eyes are kept closely focused on Bethany, the public soon turned to the Grey fin circling the ten year old girl. “ someone has to help her!”

From the shadow a man emerges, grasping a single red float between his muscular palms. He soon runs into the water but he was too late.

As the struggle to rescue little Bethany Angelo became harder and harder so did her will to survive. The animal came nearer, feeding on the blood drifting from the cut on her knee. It's getting closer, she is unaware. It's nose Rubs against her fragile spine and prepares to pounce.
Her lungs can't take it any longer and I that moment she begins to sink deep into the Abyss but before she gets to far down, the mouth of the shark snaps at her leg, taking only her left foot and allowing her to lose consciousness between the bellowing screams of pain and exhaustion.
Unfortunately for the stranger his attempts to rescue Bethany sunk as she did to the lonely ocean bed. He began to dive, lower from the surface until he found her, Laying helplessly. He drags her to the surface and pulls his hand from under her limp body to wave for assistance. They came armed and ready.

After a short distance via helicopter, Bethany along with her sorrowful parents arrived in the emergency department of the hospital. “ i can't even look at her” her mother sadly said, “it's all my fault”. While she watched her little girl, a siren of buzzers began alarming, she needed surgery and now!

After many tedious hours on the table, she emerged from theatre, all good but without before entire left leg. Many months passed as she began to walk again with the assistance of her prosthetic leg.

On the sixteenth of February 2014, her release from hospital was celebrated by her many loved ones and  as her wish, that would be the day she returned to face her nightmare at the beach that changed her life forever.

It still looked the same, with the same trees, same water and same sand, even the the people looked the same but she wasn't, she had one less leg. To her surprise the very ice cream truck arrived at the stroke of 1pm as it did and the first to meet it was... Rua. After getting his delectable chocolate swirl, he noticed the now eleven year old girl. His head tilted to show his red scalp,” I warned you” he said.

Red Poem

Red is the colour of fire burning through the night and the sun setting on warm winters day.
Red is a symbol of love drifting through the Air and  blood pumping through your veins.
Red tastes like bitter sweetness sending tingles through my mouth.
Red reminds me of December 25th, Christmas feasts and merry jingle bells.
Red is many representatives for anger, love, heartbreak and sweetness.
All elements of being a normal human being, and I will face them all.
Red is everywhere but we don't know it because it is disguised as life!

My Horse riding experience

The fresh air flowed through the strands of its mane as my leg slid onto one side of it’s back, without hesitation it bellowed to my commands and took off.

While gripping tight on the reigns, it trotted steadily along the long grass track, circling past each and every jump and pole, resisting the urge to take a leap. We went around continuously, as if we were a repetitive song, yet nothing changed.

Then I decided to go a little faster, my foot began to move forward, gaining momentum and strength, then wham! Back it went with an almighty blow, smashing into the bare surface of its bristly skin.

In that moment, my body froze as all that surrounded me grew more active and intense, this was not a game, I was connected, one wrong move could cost my life yet how could I feel so free?

WALT: write an information report

Distinctive, fascinating, unique are only few words used to describe the cheeky chameleon.

Located in warm areas from rainforests to deserts, the chameleon is found anywhere with humid conditions including Africa, Madagascar, Southern Europe and Asia, Sri Lanka and also have been newly situated in Hawaii, California and Flo Rida. Due to the ability to change its colour, a chameleon can hide in trees, bushes and multiple other terrains without being seen.

The reptile creature is not only recognisable for its colour adaptability but also for its rapid moving tongue that exerts itself from the mouth and sticks prey consisting of insects, small lizards and young birds. Another common feature amongst the various chameleon species is the cress or horns on the brow and snout. Along with the tongue, a chameleon's prehensile tail is used to grab and wrap around objects.

Colour adaptability
Under the layers of skin and cells are guanine crystals. These are what allow certain species of chameleon to change colour depending on the surroundings. When the chameleon moves its crystals, the light effects and it camouflages itself to hide from predators or other creatures. The variety of colours vary from hot to cold shades including red, orange, yellow, pink, black, brown, green and purple.

Chameleons are such fascinating creatures with many unique features, making them ideal for a ‘different’ type of household pet.

How braces work?

In the past weeks , Room 1 have been focusing on explanation writing.

WALT: Write an explanation
Success criteria:
1) Identify how to plan and explanation
2) use correct format

How braces work?

With over 33% of people in the world having braces, the modern way to straighten teeth is surely gaining popularity from older times.  Although such a large amount of the population have braces, many others don’t know how they work, what the effect is on our whole mouth health and for those who were naturally given straight teeth, what it means emotionally.

What are braces?

Braces are a metal device used to straighten and align teeth that may suffer from overbite, crowding, crooked posture/ Position and for general health reasons. The metal tabs are attached to teeth and are anchoring a wire running along the teeth and eventually after a long period of time ( 6-24 months) the braces will have reformed the teeth.

Why do we have braces?

Especially coming from my personal experience, braces can improve some in mental, physical and emotional ways, therefore a large percentage of people with braces are using the tool for cosmetic reasons more than medical. Braces can also improve your gum health as it is positioning your teeth in a healthy place to brush all areas, unfortunately through this the transition can be painful.

How do braces work?

When questionng if braces are needed, your orthodontist will x- ray your teeth and in some cases, teeth extraction is nessacary to get the best outcome overall. Once ready, the orthodontsit will begin the process by cleaning the surface of the teeth so the glue can be applied properly. Then, they will apply the brackets to the surface of the tooth. Next a long wire will be locked into the brackets so it runs along the surface of the teeth. During a period of months to years, the wire will be tightened annually to ensure the teeth are moving into the right position. Rubber bands are also attached to the brackets and anchor, pushing the teeth into the desired place. Once the orthodontist is happy with the formation, the braces will be removed ans a temporary retainer is put in plae to ensu the teeth stay in a required angle and shape. The retainer can be worn for as long as the patient wants and is willing to keep the teeth how they are.

Braces, although costly are extremely beneficial and are definitelty worth investigating and then investing in, not only so you have straight teeth, also a healthy mouth and an extra burst of confidence.
